Eurojackpot Odds Explained: What Does 1 in 139,838,160 Mean?

A mathematical guide | Lottomaster

Eurojackpot draws five main numbers from 50 and two Euro numbers from 12. The jackpot odds are 1 in 139,838,160. Here is how that figure is calculated, and what historical lottery data can—and cannot—tell us.

Counting all possible tickets

There are 2,118,760 unordered ways to choose five numbers from 50, and 66 ways to choose two numbers from 12. Multiplying gives 2,118,760 × 66 = 139,838,160 complete combinations. For any particular draw, only one combination matches all seven numbers.

Ten distinct entries in the same draw cover ten combinations, producing jackpot odds of 10 in 139,838,160, or approximately 1 in 13,983,816. Buying more entries also increases the cost. Nothing guarantees a win.

Do hot and cold numbers matter?

A historical frequency table may show some numbers appearing more often than others. In a fair, independent draw, however, each main number has the same probability of appearing among the next five main numbers: 5/50 = 10%. A number that has been missing for months is not “due”.

Even the sequence 1–2–3–4–5 is no less likely as a specific ticket than any other specific five-number selection. Its pattern simply attracts attention.

Odd and even numbers: group sizes are different

The main pool contains 25 even and 25 odd numbers. Exactly three even and two odd numbers can be selected in C(25,3) × C(25,2) = 690,000 ways, or approximately 32.57% of all five-number selections. Five even numbers can be selected in C(25,5) = 53,130 ways, approximately 2.51%.

So the set of 3:2 combinations is larger than the set of 5:0 combinations. But each individual valid combination still has exactly the same jackpot probability once the Euro numbers are included.
