Eurojackpot vs EuroMillions: The Same Jackpot Odds, Different Rules

A data-led comparison | Lottomaster

Eurojackpot and EuroMillions are major European number lotteries. Both currently use five numbers from 50 plus two numbers from 12. As a result, their main jackpot odds are identical: 1 in 139,838,160.

Why the jackpot odds match

For either lottery, the calculation is C(50,5) × C(12,2) = 139,838,160. Every particular valid full combination therefore has the same chance of matching all drawn numbers. A larger advertised jackpot does not make a particular set of numbers more likely to win.

Key differences

Eurojackpot draws take place on Tuesdays and Fridays. In March 2022, the game increased its maximum jackpot from €90 million to €120 million and expanded the Euro-number selection from two out of ten to two out of twelve.

EuroMillions also draws on Tuesdays and Fridays, but its current jackpot cap is €250 million. Ticket prices, national add-on games and participation arrangements can differ by country; these should not be confused with the shared EuroMillions main draw.

Does a larger jackpot mean better value?

Not necessarily. The probability of hitting the main jackpot is the same. A meaningful comparison would also consider ticket cost, prize distribution, the possibility of sharing a jackpot with other winners, and country-specific rules. A larger prize is not a better probability.

Comparing the data without predicting the future

Lottomaster lets visitors examine historical results, number frequencies and generated combinations for both lotteries. Comparing the same measure over the same period can reveal interesting differences in past outcomes. Independent draws mean those differences do not reliably predict future results.
